Musing and thoughts from a software developer and gamer.
And Other Stories of Murder
Published on February 14, 2005 By iefan In Welcome
To be truthful, I have been arond this site for a while now. I had used some Stardock products in the past, I think I had only purchased one prior to GalCiv. GalCiv got me excited for a game. The idea of the Stardock for comerical distrubition is also something I am fond of. I ended up getting the whole shebang (Dregin.net) shortly there afterwards. When it came around to renewal time, just when Totalgaming was starting up, I spent even more money to go ahead and get that as well. I'm also excited for GalCiv II, and it turns out it might be the only thing that will have me keep my PC around much longer.

What was that? Keep my PC around? That's right, I'm a Mac user. FrogBoy posted an article about how he didn't like getting trolled for posting a press release. In itself, unimportant. However, in the discussions it was brought up the difference that is often seen between free software and non-free software comes down to finish and polish. This is the same difference that makes me a Mac user over a PC user. Mac OS X just has the extra polish that makes the experience all the more better. Things just work, I rarely have to mess with anything. If I need it, the customizibility is there. Having grew up computing on Unix I know how to make things at the core of Mac OS X work exactly how I want to, if it's worth the time to invest into it.

I currently develop for the Mac platform. I enjoy it more than when I wrote software for Windows. Much, much more than writing for GTK+ or QT. (The polish free software lacks?) If someone paid me, I'd like develop for Windows. I'm not agaist it, it's just not my first choice. In the end though, I play computer games on my PC. That's because I'm pretty limited to Warcraft III for my Mac. Though it will run MOOIII just fine, GalCiv is a much more enjoyable experience.

So where's the tales of murder? Other than my PC is getting pretty old, and will one day die - not much. This is just me welcoming and informing people were I come from. Being a reader of JU pretty much since it was linked to from the other Stardock sites, I finally descided it was time to start posting. Most of the time I avoid posting because the two browsers I use the most don't work well with a lot of the functions - such as quoting. Firefox does nothing when I click on those buttons, nor does Safari on my Mac. Maybe it's something JU could address in the future...
